The September Reset: How to Reboot Your Routine for Fall

Can you believe summer is almost over? If your house is starting to feel a little chaotic, or if your own schedule has gotten a little off track, don't worry. September is the perfect time for a fresh start. I want to share with you how to do a “September Reset” for your life, your home, and even your heart.

What is a September Reset?

Think of it like a mini New Year but without the pressure. The idea is simple. You pause, take stock of your routines, your habits, and your goals, and then gently reset them to start the new season with more intention. It is not about throwing everything out and starting over. It is about building on what already works and making small changes that bring more peace and joy into your everyday life.

September feels like a natural reset for many of us. The kids are back to school, schedules shift, and there is a sense of structure returning after the freedom of summer. You can use this transition to your advantage and give yourself permission to start fresh.

Step 1: Take Stock of Your Current Habits

Before you make changes, take a moment to notice what is working and what is not.

  • Are mornings feeling rushed?

  • Are you forgetting meals, water, or self-care?

  • Are little clutter spots around the house starting to pile up?

  • Do you have habits that leave you drained instead of filled up?

Grab a notebook, journal, or even your phone notes and write it down. This is not about judgment. It is about awareness. Sometimes just seeing the patterns written out helps you know exactly what needs a gentle reset.

Step 2: Build Daily Structures That Work for You

Now that you know what areas need attention, you can create small routines that support you instead of overwhelm you.

  • Morning Reset: A few minutes of quiet before the house wakes up, a simple breakfast, or a short stretch can set the tone for the day.

  • Evening Reset: Spend a few minutes preparing for tomorrow. Lay out clothes, tidy the kitchen, or write a short to-do list. Your future self will thank you.

  • Self-Care Moments: You do not need a full spa day to feel cared for. Sip tea while reading, step outside for fresh air, or journal before bed. Small, consistent care adds up.

Daily structures are not about perfection. They are about creating rhythms that bring calm into your day and give your family a steadier flow.

Step 3: Declutter Your Digital and Physical Spaces

Clutter can feel heavy and distracting. September is a wonderful time to clear out both physical and digital clutter.

  • Clean up your inbox and delete old files you no longer need.

  • Remove apps from your phone that you are not using.

  • Donate clothes, toys, or kitchen items that are no longer serving your family.

  • Create one simple system for papers, school forms, or bills so that things do not pile up.

Even small amounts of decluttering create mental space and make your home feel lighter.

Step 4: Reflect on What Brings You Joy

A reset is not just about fixing problems. It is also about creating more of what makes you happy. Ask yourself:

  • What moments this summer made me feel alive?

  • What do I want to carry into fall?

  • How can I create more time for the things that matter?

Reflection helps you set intentions that go beyond chores and routines. It keeps your reset rooted in joy.

Step 5: Use My Printable September Reset Planner

To make this process easier, I created a free September Reset Planner. Inside, you will find space to track your current habits, build new routines, set goals, and celebrate your wins. It is simple, practical, and designed for busy moms like you. Print it out, put it on your fridge, or tuck it into your journal. Let it guide you through your reset one small step at a time.

You can save this planner by right-clicking the image (or tapping and holding if you’re on your phone) and selecting ‘Save Image As.’ Then you can print it at home!

You don't  need to overhaul your entire life this September. Start small. A few intentional changes can transform your days from chaotic to calm and maybe even joyful.

Here is your reminder that you are capable, you are loved, and you are not alone in this.

You've got this!
