How I Went from “Plant Killer” to Houseplant Enthusiast

I have a complicated history with houseplants.

In the past, I accidentally killed more than I care to admit. My kids even gave me the title “The Plant Killer” (complete with a dramatic theme song they made up just for me 😅).

There was a stretch where I just gave up entirely. No plants. No guilt. Just fake greenery and silence. But something in me missed that little touch of life in the home so I gave it another go.

And I’m happy to report… I’ve found my groove! I now have several healthy houseplants thriving around the house. It took a lot of trial and error (and a little humility), but the benefits? So worth it.

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a certified plant assassin like I was, I truly believe that everyone should have at least one houseplant in their home. And here are 5 solid reasons why plus 5 beginner-friendly plants to check out at the end!

Reason #1: They Can Reduce Stress

I’m all for anything that helps me manage stress and houseplants do just that.

Studies have shown that interacting with plants for even just 10 minutes can lower both mental and physical stress. One study compared two groups: one did a plant-based task, the other worked on a computer. Guess which group felt calmer and had lower blood pressure?

(Hint: It wasn’t the keyboard warriors.)

Being around plants can lower your heart rate and create a sense of calm which we all need more of these days.

Reason #2: They Improve Air Quality

Houseplants are like nature’s little air purifiers.

They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making them great “teammates” for us humans. Some plants also remove small amounts of toxins from the air like formaldehyde and carbon monoxide.

If you want cleaner, more breathable air in your home (without fancy filters or machines), just add plants. Bonus: some even help humidify the air too!

Reason #3: They Boost Productivity

This one surprised me, but it’s totally true ~ plants make us more productive.

In one study, college students worked about 12% faster in a room with plants. Another found that office employees with greenery took fewer sick days and were more creative.

Whether it’s your home office, kitchen command center, or homeschool corner, adding a plant can help improve focus and motivation. It's a simple upgrade with powerful results.

Reason #4: Caring for Plants Is Therapeutic

There’s actually a name for this: horticultural therapy.

It’s been used for decades to help people with depression, anxiety, and dementia. But you don’t have to be struggling with a mental illness to benefit from the soothing effects of working with plants.

Even something as small as watering a plant or touching its leaves can calm the nervous system and connect us to nature. It’s a grounding practice and it might be just what you need in your daily routine.

Reason #5: They Just Look Amazing

Let’s be real plants are gorgeous. And they’re usually more affordable than other types of home decor.

There’s a plant for every vibe:

  • Small and subtle

  • Big and bold

  • Hanging, trailing, climbing, or flowering

They add texture, life, and character to any room and guests almost always notice them (in a good way!). A healthy plant can be just as conversation-worthy as a framed art print or trendy bookshelf.

5 Houseplants to Try (Even If You’re a Former Plant Killer Like Me)

If you’re ready to give houseplants a try, here are 5 that I personally recommend either because I’ve had success with them, or because they’re well-known for being easy to care for:

1. Any Type of Succulent

Perfect for beginners! They come in so many shapes and colors, and they thrive on neglect. Seriously.

Top picks:

  • Jade Plant

  • Snake Plant (low light superstar)

  • Aloe Vera

  • Burro’s Tail

  • String of Pearls

They purify air, add humidity, and look adorable on windowsills.

2. Peace Lily

This one is elegant and easygoing. With glossy green leaves and a signature white bloom, it’s a classic choice.

Benefits:

  • Absorbs mold spores

  • Helps prevent mildew

  • Grows well in low light

It’s ideal for shady corners that need some life.

3. Pothos

A crowd favorite and with good reason.

  • Improves air quality

  • Thought to clear negative energy (if you're into Feng Shui)

  • Practically indestructible

Pothos vines can hang, trail, or climb. You can train them into all kinds of fun shapes!

4. Rubber Tree Plant

Want a statement plant? This is it.

Though they can grow quite tall, they’re manageable indoors and excellent air purifiers especially for formaldehyde and mold.

Despite their size, they’re pretty low maintenance and only need occasional pruning.

5. Ferns (For the Brave!)

Ferns are a little more particular! They need humidity, the right lighting, and consistent care.

But the reward? A lush, graceful plant that adds serious charm to your space. They also help remove pollutants and boost humidity.

If you’re up for the challenge, they’re worth the effort!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re decorating, de-stressing, or trying to add life to your space (literally), houseplants are a fantastic investment. And if I can keep them alive, I promise you can too.
