Important Reminder for Moms: Not All Baby Products on Facebook Marketplace Are Safe
Back in 2021, the Boppy Newborn Lounger was recalled due to a tragic and very real danger: the risk of suffocation. Parents were urged to stop using the pillow immediately. But heartbreakingly, two more babies have died using this lounger even after the recall.
You might be wondering how this is still happening. After all, the product hasn’t been legally sold since the recall.
The problem? Facebook Marketplace.
Despite being a recalled item, nearly 1,000 Boppy Newborn Loungers are still being listed on Facebook Marketplace every month. Yes, every month. And while it's technically illegal to list or sell recalled products, many of these listings go live, get sold, and are only removed after someone reports them. But by then, the damage may already be done.
And it’s not just the Boppy.
The Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper, recalled in 2019 after being linked to over 100 infant deaths (including eight deaths since the recall), continues to show up on resale platforms like Facebook Marketplace as well.
This is beyond frustrating, it’s terrifying.
So here’s why I’m sharing this:
I know how tempting it is to snag a great deal on baby gear secondhand. But please, always double-check to make sure the item hasn’t been recalled. Even if it looks brand new. Even if the seller “barely used it.” Even if it's in the original box. It’s not worth the risk.
➡️ You can check for recalls on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website (CPSC.gov) before buying or selling any baby product.
And to all the amazing moms out there selling or donating their old baby gear:
Please take a moment to check whether the item has been recalled. It’s such a simple step, but it could literally save a life.
Let’s help keep all of our babies safe!
